Recently I became curious about how Crocs came to be. It turns out that its only been since 2002 that Crocs have been around. And not surprisingly Crocs sprang forth from Denver, Coloroda. Yep, we have the folks out in Rocky Mountain High country to thank for what I like to think of my Crocs as...WEARABLE ERASERS.
It's true, every day I slip my feet into one of my many pair of Crocs and I can't help but think of those wonderful spongy green erasers I got every year right before starting the new school year when I was a kid. I always marveled over the subtle springiness of those erasers. Crocs are the same way.

Grandma's Feet
When I got married I inherited a storybook grandmother. Grandma Hudie was my husband’s paternal grandmother and I fell in love with her at first sight. She was in her late 70’s when we first met. She had to be about 6 feet tall then which made me wonder how tall she must’ve been in her youth. Grandma Hudie had long hair that she wore pulled back in a long pony-tail and then wound around in a knot at the nape of her neck. She even used those old brown tortoise shell hair pins to keep her knot primly pinned in place. Grandma Hudie wore what was known as wash dresses, cotton dresses made from old fashion printed fabric. When each of the dresses wore out she would cut them up into squares to be used in her handmade quilts. Nothing was ever wasted. And over her dresses she always wore a homemade bib apron. The top looped around the back of her neck and the apron was anchored around her bountiful waist by two long sashes tied into a neat bow at the back.
Grandma Hudie always walked at a snail’s pace and often times looked in pain although she never ever complained. The source of her pain was her feet. The first time I noticed them I flinched. At first I thought her knarled feet had broken through her dime store bought shoes but no, on closer inspection I saw that she had taken a scissors or knife and cut slits in her shoes so her toes, covered with corns and bunions, wouldn’t rub so much against her shoes when she walked.
I asked family members about Grandma’s feet and they explained that she had worked hard her whole life to help provide for the family. Living in the country there wasn’t a lot of money so when it came to shoes Grandma bought the cheapest one’s that she could find that still looked acceptable. Her aged feet were a testament to what happens when you don’t make your feet a priority and invest in good footwear.
From that point on I made a rule to NEVER skip on the quality of my shoes and I tell everyone I know to invest in good shoes too so as we all age we can keep our feet healthy. As Grandma Hudie grew older and older her feet finally gave out on her. I don’t think there is anything sadder then to not be able to move through the world on your own two feet.
